When planning your birth experience, one of the most important decisions you’ll make is choosing your care provider. For many families, midwifery care offers a holistic, personalized approach to pregnancy and childbirth. But what exactly is midwifery, and how can a midwife support your birth journey, whether at a birth center or at home in the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) area? Let’s explore!
What Is Midwifery?
Midwifery is the practice of caring for low risk women during pregnancy, labor, birth, and the postpartum period. Midwives are trained medical professionals who provide comprehensive care, emphasizing natural processes and individualized attention. They approach childbirth as a normal physiological event rather than a medical condition, empowering families to make informed decisions about their care.
Midwives can work in various settings, including hospitals, birth centers, and homes. Their scope of practice includes:
Relationship building and family centered care.
Monitoring the health of the mother and baby.
Providing education about pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care.
Offering emotional and physical support during labor.
Assisting with delivery and postpartum recovery.
Creating a birth plan that aligns with the family’s values and preferences.
Types of Midwives
There are different types of midwives, each with unique training and credentials. In Texas you will often hear of these:
Licensed Midwives (LMs): State-licensed practitioners, focused on community-based care. Their training emphasizes on normal low risk pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period. Regardless of which pathway is taken for education there is a 2 year minimum of hands-on skills and births required prior to taking the CPM exam needed for licensure. Texas LMs are regulated by TDLR.
Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs): Specialists in out-of-hospital births, such as home births or birth center deliveries. Training and education emphasizes normal low risk physiological birth. NARM which sets the standard for the competency-based CPM credential.
Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs): Trained within the medical model, registered nurses with advanced education in midwifery. CNM programs range in length from 9 months - several years. They often work in hospitals but may also attend births at birth centers and homes.
In the DFW area, you’ll find all these types of midwives ready to support your birth preferences.
Why Choose a Midwife?
Midwifery care is often sought by families who value a more natural and personalized approach to childbirth. Here are some key benefits:
Holistic Care: Midwives address not just physical health but also emotional, social, and cultural needs.
Lower Intervention Rates: Studies show midwife-led births are associated with fewer medical interventions, such as cesarean sections and epidurals.
Continuity of Care: Many midwives provide consistent care throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum, building a trusting relationship.
Informed and Shared Decision-Making: Midwives prioritize shared decision-making, ensuring you’re empowered and educated.
